October
2009
October has seen a drastic drop in the number of reports received
- only a very disappointing four. This, naturally, means the
data is likely to be very unreliable!
However, going with what little there is, the indications are
as follows -
Blue Tit and Great Tit are both well down on last month but
Coal Tit has increased greatly. Chaffinch is much the same and
Robin has increased a good bit. Dunnock sightings have doubled
since last month, House Sparrow sightings have plummeted, Blackbird
has increased. Greenfinch reports have dropped to nil while
Goldfinch has dropped considerably. Wren has increased strongly.
Song Thrush has also increased strongly - they are starting
to come into gardens looking for ripe berries. There were fewer
Jackdaws recorded. Siskin records are very low, well down on
last month. Woodpecker sightings are much the same as last month,
still down on previous months. Starlings seem to be well down,
this may be due to our 'residents' starting to move off south,
but we should expect a rise next month as winter migrants arrive.
Collared Dove reports show a fair drop, possibly due to the
low number of reports. This month has also seen the first reports
of Redwing arriving from Scandinavia although no reports of
Fieldfare in the gardens yet.

Now the
maps (new ones covering a wider area). We have included only
selected species. If anyone out there would like to see more
species listed, please get in touch and we will see what we
can do.
You can
change this map view to show the locations where some selected
birds were seen and not seen. The symbols used are:

To give
an indication of how common all these birds are, here are some
more charts - they are not easy to make out as we have to reduce
their size considerably to fit the web page! However, choose
a chart from the list and then clicking on the chart to open
it in a new window. Internet Explorer users may have to magnify
it to full size to see it clearly.
