Charts
are difficult to read as they have had to be reduced in size
to fit on screen. You can, however, click on any chart (not
the maps) and the chart will reload in a new page at full size
and be much clearer.
June
2009
Only seven reports this month - but generally covering a much
wider area and includes a new contribution from Johnstonebridge.
There has been a notable shift in the pattern from last month.
The overall picture shows a big drop in Coal Tits,
some drop in Dunnock, a small drop in Greenfinch & Goldfinch,
a big drop in Siskins, no Long-tailed Tits seen this time, Carrion
Crow and Collared Doves are up and there have been no Redpoll
sighted. This does not give the full picture, however. Blue
Tits, Great Tits, Chaffinches, Goldfinches, Woodpeckers &
Crows are now seen on most days in the gardens where they were
seen. This is up on previous records. On the other hand, the
number of birds sighted on between one quarter and one half
of days is well down. Interestingly, though, the number seen
on less than a quarter of days is well up. Why there should
be a drop in the 25-50% bracket while the others are increased
is difficult to establish. We may surmise that the ones seen
in the 50+% category may well include young birds moving out
into the open while some adult birds are either nesting later
or gone back to raising a second brood so are not seen as regularly.
The same
information in a different form -
Now the
maps (new ones covering a wider area). We have included only
selected species. If anyone out there would like to see more
species listed, please get in touch and we will see what we
can do.
You can
change this map view to show the locations where some selected
birds were seen and not seen. The symbols used are:

To give
an indication of how common all these birds are, here are some
more charts - they are not easy to make out as we have to reduce
their size considerably to fit the web page! However, choose
a chart from the list and then clicking on the chart to open
it in a new window. Internet Explorer users may have to magnify
it to full size to see it clearly.
